Sydänmaa Village Organization
(established 1979)

 - village meetings and events

 - voluntary work

 - trips

 - celebrations

The most important voluntary projects during 25 years

 The Tar-burning Pit "Tervahauta"

The first three tar-burning happenings were arranged in Nummioja where there is an old tar-burning pit.  Since the turn of the new millenium  these happenings have been organized close to the pond of Löytäne where there is a new pit.

For the tar-burning  the villagers have to look for damaged tree tops or stems of old pines.  The burning of this chopped damaged wood is producing tar.

Flipping the title "Tervahauta"  you can see  with the help of the photos how this tar-burning happening is going on in stages during a year.

The Cottage of Nummioja "Nummiojan mökki"

There is a living-room, a little kitchen, a sauna with the changing room and a terrace in this cottage.  The toilet is in the outhouse, next to a wood shed. There is also a barbecue building in the yard and a place  to wash carpets in the nearness.

The cottage is warmed up with the fireplace and the electric heaters and it is  in use all the year round.

The Outbuilding of The Sydänmaa School "Koulu"

The building is fully repared both outside and inside.  In the building there is a big room suitable for handicraft, gymnastics etc. There is also a fireplace room with a kitchen corner and a sauna with two changing and two shower rooms.  There is a sleeping balcony in the fireplace room, too.  So it's possible to stay overnight in the building.   You can hire this place phoning to Kirsi Eskola  050 3701 074

Behind the Outbuilding there is a tennis-court made of villagers. The voluntary village tennis players are taking care of its upkeep.

The Sheds "Laavut"

The river Pyhäjoki is flowing through the area of Sydänmaa and Löytäne and little ponds (reservoirs) have been built in the river to slow up pollutants to get into the Pyhäjärvi Lake.

There are two campfire sheds by the ponds and  an ornithology tower behind the Löytäne shed made by voluntary villagers.

The Home Museum "Kotimuseo"

There is also a home museum in the Sydänmaa area.  It's belonging to Kiviranta farm and if you want to visit this museum, you can phone the owner of this farm, Pertti Kiviranta 02-8674655 and he will  introduce the home of his grandparents to you.

There are nine original grey buildings from the beginning of the last century in this museum.
